Two works from a journey across Iceland – Akureyri to Reykjavík, Iceland | 12 October 2026
A journey of approximately six hours across Iceland produced two works concerned with different ways of experiencing and recording a landscape.
Both were made from photographs and moving images taken through the windows of a bus. The weather changed rapidly, isolated buildings and infrastructure appeared along the road, and extraordinary views came and went without the possibility of stopping.
Through Glass retains something of the experience of travelling through this landscape. Transect reconstructs the journey as a single photographic composition, transforming its passage through time into an arrangement in space.
Through Glass
A landscape in transit | Moving image
Travelling across Iceland, I was struck by the speed with which the landscape changed. Rain, cloud and sunlight continually altered the appearance of the mountains and open spaces. Small settlements, farms, fences and power lines appeared intermittently, often emphasising rather than diminishing the isolation of the surrounding landscape.
There was a tension between the wonder of what I was seeing and the frustration of being unable to stop. The window provided a continuous view, but the movement of the bus determined how long anything could be observed. Places that invited closer attention were already disappearing behind us.
Through Glass explores this experience of looking from a moving vehicle. The landscape is continually revealed and lost, while the road provides a persistent direction through the changing weather and terrain

119 photographs | Composite photographic work
From 119 photographs taken during the same journey, I extracted a narrow horizontal strip from each image, generally centred on the horizon, and arranged them in the order they were taken.
The photographs were not made at regular intervals. I photographed when something caught my attention, sometimes in quick succession and sometimes with long gaps between images. The resulting composition therefore records not only changes in the landscape but also the uneven rhythm of my looking.
Read from top to bottom, the strips trace the journey from Akureyri towards Reykjavík. Mountains, moorland, changing weather and occasional signs of habitation appear and disappear. The horizontal structure creates continuity, while abrupt shifts in light, colour and form reveal the discontinuities of the original experience.
Where Through Glass unfolds the journey through time, Transect gathers it into a single visual field. The landscape can now be surveyed all at once, but only through the fragments I happened to photograph.
